In his welcome address, the Convener of NBMA, Omogbolahan Akinwumi, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to preserving professional values, promoting mentorship, and creating platforms that empower the next generation of media practitioners. “The essence of Passing the Mic could not be more timely. At a time when everyone with a smartphone is a ‘media house,’ a ring light is sometimes mistaken for a broadcasting licence, and going viral occasionally competes with being credible, this conversation has become more important than ever,” said the NBMA Convener, Omogbolahan Akinwumi. The Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, University of Lagos, Professor Sunday Oloruntola, delivered a welcome address themed “The State of Broadcasting in Nigeria: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” highlighting the evolution of the industry, current realities, and the opportunities ahead for emerging professionals. The intellectual conversations began with the first keynote session delivered by Mr. Victor Ogwezzy, who represented Dr. Tijjani Ramalan, Chairman of the Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria (IBAN). His presentation, themed “Restoring Professionalism in an Era of Virality and Instant Fame,” examined the urgent need for credibility, ethics, and responsibility in a rapidly changing media environment. Beyond conversations and knowledge sharing, the event celebrated excellence through the presentation of Certificates of Excellence to panelists and Certificates of Distinguished Leadership to keynote speakers, recognising their contributions to industry growth and capacity development. The defining moment of the lecture was the symbolic “Passing the Mic” ceremony, where seasoned broadcasters officially handed over the microphone to students from the University of Lagos and Yaba College of Technology, representing the next generation entrusted with carrying forward the broadcasting legacy. The emotional ceremony was elevated by the introduction and sharing of the “Future Broadcaster’s Pledge,” as students committed themselves to upholding professionalism, integrity, ethical storytelling, creativity, and responsibility as the next custodians of the broadcasting profession. The pledge transformed the ceremony from a symbolic handover into a commitment to responsible storytelling, reminding the next generation that receiving the microphone is not only about having a voice, but accepting the responsibility that comes with shaping narratives and informing society. Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 21-year-old suspected armed robber after recovering a suspected human body part, firearms, and other incriminating items during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Lekki-Epe Expressway. The suspect, identified as Samson Onilewaji, was apprehended after police intercepted an unregistered commercial shuttle bus carrying six occupants. A search of the vehicle and its passengers led to the discovery of a suspected human right hand concealed in the suspect’s possession. Also recovered from him were two locally made pistols, one live cartridge, two axes, one POS terminal, and five ATM cards believed to have been stolen from robbery victims. During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to recently robbing three individuals of their valuables, including the recovered POS terminal and ATM cards. Police are currently working to trace and identify the victims so their belongings can be returned. Investigators have also launched a separate probe to determine the identity of the owner of the suspected human hand, the circumstances surrounding its possession, and its intended use. Efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the criminal network linked to the suspect. The suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Isah Abdullahi, attached to the armoury of the 12 Police Mobile Force in Minna, Niger State, has allegedly died by suicide amid investigations into the illegal sale of arms and ammunition. The Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident in a press statement, noting that DSP Abdullahi was arrested on December 15, 2025, following allegations that he was involved in the unlawful sale of arms and ammunition to bandits. According to the police, an arms audit was conducted on December 16, 2025, to determine the number of missing rifles and ammunition. During the audit and ongoing investigation, DSP Abdullahi reportedly shot himself in the head with a pistol and died instantly. SP Abiodun further disclosed that the officers assigned to conduct the audit and investigation have been arrested for negligence, for allegedly allowing the suspect access to a firearm. Operatives of the Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have discovered a large sum of counterfeit foreign currency notes, totaling $3,430,000 and €280,000, in the possession of a five-member syndicate that was arrested for allegedly defrauding one Halima Sanni of the sum of N26,550,000. The arrested herbalists, Akingbola Omotayo, Adeola Funsho Ogunrinde, Yahaya Amodu, Kubratu Babalola Olaitan (female), and Familola Sunday Olaitan, were arrested on December 7 and 8, 2025, at their shrines in Osun and Lagos States, respectively, following a thorough surveillance and intelligence gathering on their fraudulent activities. Investigations revealed that the suspects were allegedly defrauding unsuspecting individuals of their legitimate earnings under the guise of providing spiritual cleansing and solutions to various ailments. They also allegedly assured their victims of their powers to conjure up large sums of money, which would need to be cleansed by a genie through spiritual sacrifice before being spent. The suspects achieved this by hypnotizing their victims into providing money for the sacrifice. Other items recovered from the suspects include two exotic cars and a mobile phone. 190 Views
